At Source, we acknowledge sustainability is not a destination, it’s a journey. As a family-owned US-based manufacturing organization, Source International is working to build the best designed furniture of the highest quality using the finest materials available by people who are treated with respect, all while striving to leave the smallest possible footprint behind.
The future of design demands more from all of us — more responsibility, more innovation, more care. At Source, we’re building a future where beauty, performance, and sustainability are inseparable. Our commitment is clear: reduce our footprint, support sustainable sourcing, and manufacture furniture that is healthier for the world around us. Whether it’s contributing to LEED- and WELL-certified projects or minimizing emissions in our supply chain, every step we take moves us closer to a future that’s as inspiring as it is sustainable.
We are organizing our actions in alignment with the Common Materials Framework impact categories and first factors so we can leverage the language of the industry and our customers. Using the CMF impacts as an organizing framework, have designed a Sustainability Roadmap that will enable us to quickly take next steps across specific sustainability areas:
Continue to demonstrate reduced VOCs and ensure our product certifications align to the industry's highest standards
Systematically work with our suppliers to explore material ingredient reporting feasibility with a goal to optimize the materials used in our products
Work toward operational and product impact transparency by benchmarking our operational impacts and product footprints
Ensure the recycled components of packaging we are already using are diligently verified
Formalize our approach to circularity to take advantage of our products existing lifetime structural warranty and ability to be disassembled and refreshed for re-use
Share transparently the policies we have in place to protect and benefit our employees and establish those expectations across our supply chain
Sustainability isn’t something we’re promising tomorrow — it’s something we’re delivering today. From the ground up, our process is built for positive impact. We manufacture by hand in Sutton, Massachusetts — close to major population centers to reduce shipping emissions. Our facilities run on low-energy lighting, and we’re actively recycling tens of thousands of pounds of materials each year. Every element — from the recycled content in our packaging to the adhesives and finishes we use — is selected to minimize harm and maximize health.
We handcraft every product in Massachusetts, close to major urban centers, to reduce shipping emissions and serve customers faster.
Each year, we recycle over 25,000 pounds of fabric scraps, keeping valuable materials out of landfills and giving them new life.
Our cardboard packaging contains at least 78% recycled material and uses water-based adhesives and inks to minimize environmental impact.
We’ve upgraded our entire facility with low-energy LED lighting, dramatically reducing energy use and lowering our carbon footprint.
The materials we choose are the first line of defense in our sustainability mission. We believe the best spaces are beautiful, functional, and free from unnecessary harm. That’s why we use low-VOC adhesives, CertiPUR-US™ certified foam, and sustainably sourced woods. Our materials are selected not only for their performance but for their environmental impact, ensuring our products help create spaces that support human health and well-being.
CertiPUR-US™ certified foams with low emissions and no harmful chemicals
Water-based adhesives for cleaner indoor environments
Low-VOC paints and finishes across all wood components
Packaging sourced with high recycled content and recyclability in mind
How and where we manufacture matters just as much as what we manufacture. By building our furniture by hand in the United States, close to where our customers live and work, we significantly reduce the emissions associated with global freight. Our commitment extends beyond location: we use lean, efficient processes that limit waste, recycle excess material, and meet the strictest VOC standards for healthier spaces.
Localized manufacturing to reduce transportation emissions
Efficient, small-batch production to minimize waste
Recycling paint overspray and finishing materials
Meeting and exceeding ANSI/BIFMA e3 VOC emission standards
When it comes to sustainability, trust is everything. That’s why we back up every promise with third-party certifications that meet the toughest industry standards. Our products help architects, designers, and clients meet their goals for healthier, high-performance spaces — all while offering the style, comfort, and craftsmanship Source is known for. Sustainability isn’t just a feature — it’s built into every chair, table, and stool we create.
At Source, we believe the future of design is sustainable, thoughtful, and beautifully made.
Every choice we make — from the materials we source to the way we build — is a reflection of our commitment to doing better for our customers, our communities, and our planet.
We’re proud of how far we’ve come — and even more excited for where we’re headed.
Because building a better world doesn’t happen later. It happens now.
And it happens one chair, one table, one good decision at a time.
